Many public employees don’t realize that the NYSHIP Empire Plan provides benefits for complementary health services. Under most policies, you’re eligible for both acupuncture and massage therapy treatments through your insurance plan.
What NYSHIP Covers for Acupuncture
- Up to 20 visits per year. Empire Plan members can typically receive 20 acupuncture sessions each calendar year.
- Licensed practitioners only. Treatment must be provided by a licensed acupuncturist.
- Medical necessity. Additional visits may be covered when they’re considered medically necessary by your physician.
Massage Therapy Benefits
- 20 massage therapy sessions per year. NYSHIP generally covers up to 20 visits for therapeutic massage.
- Therapeutic care—not spa massage. Sessions must be provided by a licensed massage therapist for a medically necessary condition.
Who’s Eligible?
These benefits are available to New York State employees and retirees who are enrolled in the NYSHIP Empire Plan. Spouses and dependents covered by your plan may also be eligible.
How to Verify Your Benefits
- Call the member services number on your health insurance card.
- Ask about your annual acupuncture and massage therapy allowances.
- Contact our office—our front desk can help verify your benefits and explain what to expect.
Seasonal Self‑Care Tips
Autumn and winter are great times to use your benefits. Acupuncture can boost your immune system and reduce seasonal aches, while therapeutic massage helps relieve stress and tight muscles from shoveling snow or holiday shopping.
