Many public employees don’t realize that the NYSHIP Empire Plan provides benefits for complementary health services. Under most policies, you’re eligible for both acupuncture and massage therapy treatments through your insurance plan.
What NYSHIP Covers for Acupuncture
- Unlimited visits per year with a co-charge. NYSHIP Empire Plan members can access unlimited acupuncture visits when you see an in-network provider, with a $25 or $35 co-charge per visit depending on the service.
- Licensed practitioners only. Treatment must be provided by a licensed acupuncturist.
- Plan specifics vary. Additional conditions may apply depending on your specific NYSHIP plan, so be sure to verify your benefits.
- Up to 20 visits per year after your deductible. NYSHIP typically covers 20 massage therapy sessions each year once your deductible is met.
- Doctor’s script required. You’ll need a prescription from your physician, and sessions must be provided by a licensed massage therapist for a medically necessary condition.
These benefits are available to New York State employees and retirees who are enrolled in the NYSHIP Empire Plan.

Seasonal Self‑Care Tips
Autumn and winter are great times to use your benefits. Acupuncture can boost your immune system and reduce seasonal aches, while therapeutic massage helps relieve stress and tight muscles from shoveling snow or holiday shopping.
